Social Immersion Project (SIP)
SIP, a unique initiative of JAGSOM, sensitizes students to the needs of the community and enables to identify their social problems through research. Students will learn to design solutions for social problems through a Techno Economic Viability (TEV) study, thereby enabling sustainable social positive and measurable impact - all this by completely immersing into the community. IFIM has established a CSR Centre known as the V.B. Padode Centre for Sustainability. The SIP initiative falls under the umbrella of this Centre. The Social Immersion Program will begin in Term 2 and end along with Term 3. The institution has tied up with NGO’s across India who work closely with students throughout the project. These NGOs are specialists in Social Research and in solving Social Problems.
- To empathize with social issues and feel responsible for solving them.
- To develop critical thinking, analytical and quantitative reasoning skills.
- To hone problem solving and decision making abilities.
- To work cohesively in teams, adjust and adapt towards a common goal.
- To enhance communication skills especially persuasive communication.
- To empathize and understand social issues and problems.
- To offer solutions those are measurable with social impact on society.
- To develop/augment an attitude of ‘giving back’ to society.
- To hone research skills of designing research tools, collecting, collating and organizing data.
- To develop critical thinking, and problem solving ability in a frugal and constrained environment.
- To work cohesively in teams and develop inter personal skills.
- To enhance verbal, presentation and report writing skills.
- To adapt one’s lifestyle to suit the prevailing environment.
- To develop the confidence to solve challenges and problems.
- To learn business, corporate and social etiquette.
The Immersion Pathway
The Immersion Pathway is built on IFIM’s philosophy of making a positive social change. These are key learnings are as follows
Every project is unique
SIP has been designed to give every student team tools to achieve their goals. Each community, need and project is unique and these tools will need to be applied with that unique context in mind.
Making a massive difference is HARD
Some days might be boring and repetitive, but are necessary to make a meaningful change in the community. Students are advised to remember the end goal and keep persevering.
The communities are customers, not beneficiaries
It is critical that we see the members of the community whom we are trying to serve as customers rather than as beneficiaries. This gives the community more autonomy over the solution and ensures that the solution is something the community actually wants. Therefore, students are encouraged to use research skills to arrive at the ‘social problem’ and management skills of determining a ‘sustainable’ business solution are critical.
Poverty is not just about money
It is believed, that to truly affect a meaningful change in a person’s life, we need to understand their lives holistically. The traditional measurement of ‘Rs. X per day’ cannot adequately capture the full effect of a life lived without opportunity. With experience in working with different communities, it is found that ‘Needs’ can revolve around certain key areas, which have been captured in the Social Impact Wheel.

IFIM Toastmasters Club
About Toastmasters International
Toastmasters International (TI) is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for helping members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. Their membership is more than 332,000 numbers. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 15,400 clubs in 135 countries that make up our global network of meeting locations. The world needs leaders. Leaders head families, coach teams, run businesses and mentor others. These leaders must not only accomplish, they must communicate. By regularly giving speeches, gaining feedback, leading teams and guiding others to achieve their goals in a supportive atmosphere, leaders emerge from the Toastmasters program.
Members of the club learn how to:
- Deliver effective speeches and presentations
- Easily lead teams and conduct meetings
- Give and receive constructive evaluations
- Be better listeners
Toastmasters Clubs provide regularly scheduled and structured meetings to meet with other members looking to improve public speaking skills.
If you want to overcome your fear of speaking, and you are not in a hurry to do so, then Toastmasters is a peer-to-peer learning forum, which will suit you well. You could also get some inputs on leadership if you take up a role on the committee and you refer to the manual for that role. Keep in mind that Toastmasters is a Peer-to-Peer Learning organization. If you want to learn how to overcome your fear of public speaking and you have the time to do so over six months or a year, then you should consider the option of TM because the fees are also reasonable.
About IFIM Toastmasters Club
A platform from which one can practice public speaking in an actualized setting. That is to say, rather than practicing speeches in front of a mirror, IFIM Toastmasters club allows you to work on your presentation skills in front of a real audience, with challenges. This can be invaluable to improving as a public speaker.
First, everyone wants to see you do well at Toastmasters. No one laughs. No one points at you. They want you to grow and succeed. Each meeting, everyone welcomes you with a friendly face. It is a safe, positive and encouraging environment. Another great thing about Toastmasters is that you can move at your own pace. You do not have to make speeches or participate in discussions until you are ready. There are many shy people in Toastmasters. Therefore, there is a mutual understanding of what you are going through. Did you know that some of the best speakers in the world are shy and introvert? Check the power of introverts by Susan Cain, for example.
Finally, we urge anyone who believes that a little more confidence would do them good to visit our Toastmasters club.
Being at the center of Electronic City IFIM Toastmasters’ Club has been able to tap the best that electronic city has to offer. It is able to attract the best of speech mentors, speech evaluators from Infosys, Wipro, Yokogawa, Siemens, CGI, Tech Mahindra, Deutsche Bank, Mecon and many more clubs in Electronics City. You also get to compete against the top guns of the International Speech level contest.
One of the unwritten rule while doing PGDM is networking. Sticking to your own area will not make you a diversified knowledgeable creature. To have savior faire in a field such as PGDM, one should have knowledge of every other area. Networking not only ensures you have rich quality of friends but also ensures learning. This is what IFIM Toastmasters’ club promises its members.

"“Reading has been my hobby since I was a little child and writing became a passion sometime in school. I read a lot and started writing a blog too. But all of these got lost somewhere in the
routine that life became. It was with an intention to start writing again that I joined Toastmasters a year ago. And the journey so far, has been amazing! From being an introvert who utterly
disliked talking to strangers to someone who would shy away from people in general, the roles I took up at Toastmasters made me feel at ease while conversing with anyone, be it from any walk
A lot of thinking and preparation goes into even the minutest role you take up at a Toastmasters meeting and there is much to be learned from it all. From teaching you the importance of time
management to teaching you how to think on the spot, Toastmasters inculcates in you soft-skills you would otherwise have to toil hard to learn. Carefully crafted feedbacks that are designed
to motivate and awards and recognitions for speeches and roles taken are essential components of each Toastmasters meeting. Every member who walks in definitely walks out feeling more confident,
encouraged and feeling zealous to achieve more.
We at IFIM Toastmasters Club always look to improve the quality of our members’ speaking and provide them with ample opportunities to discover their leadership abilities, which is as much a part of Toastmasters as is giving speeches. IFIM Toastmasters Club has been a Distinguished Club twice before and all the members are actively working to make it a Select Distinguished Club in the 2017-2018 year. We are optimistic that the club will achieve higher recognitions in the future and be home to at least a few Distinguished Toastmasters in the years to come.”

IFIM’s Kanyathon has been supported by S.A.F.E, since the launch of the movement in February 2013, with the main aim of promoting social responsibility and creating awareness against exploitation of women. The edition highlights the fact that a girl is on an equal pedestal as a boy.

Akshara Haasan added, “The student community at IFIM is very strong, and that in itself is half the problem solved. The initiative has been running since quite some time and is working towards the great cause of uplifting and emancipating the women and children. “This annual event is held to celebrate women and women empowerment. IFIM in association with OXFAM India & S.A.F.E supports the cause to Save the Girl Child.
IFIM Business School Bangalore, in association with OXFAM India & S.A.F.E (Students Against Female Exploitation), an organisation formed by the students of IFIM, is going to conduct a walkathon for the cause: 'Save the Girl Child’ on 8th March 2015, Sunday morning at State Central Library Campus, Cubbon Park. The 5K run will be flagged off at 6 30 am. The Guest of Honour is Mr.Ananth Kumar, Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers and a few more celebrities. Kanyathon 2015 is one of its kind event as it is a fundraiser for a good cause being organized by students themselves, who promote social responsibility.
This unique initiative, being held on International Women’s Day, is expected to attract approximately 3000+ Bangaloreans from all walks of life. The participants of both genders, varying from
students to working professionals, will start and end the run at Cubbon Park, covering a distance of 5 km in total. IFIM has been successfully organizing Kanyathon for the past 5 years. It
was originally started in 2011.
According to the recent UNICEF report, there is a drastic decline in the sex-ratio ironically in the richest states of India with the country having lost over one crore girls since 2007. One stark and obvious result of female foeticide is the low proportion of women in some of India’s states. Taking this into consideration, IFIM along with OXFAM India and S.A.F.E shall organize the Kanyathon, as an awareness drive to curb female feticide. The three major objectives for Kanyathon 2015 are Save the Girl Child, Women Empowerment and Awareness against Female Exploitation.

Since students are the future of the country, a movement of the students, by the students and for the students is expected to have a great impact. By changing the mindsets of young students, we not only ensure short-term safety, but also ensure safety for women across the nation for generations to come. The initiative is not limited to IFIM, but in the near future IFIM students would like to spread this movement to every other college and student body.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 20th Year Celebration of the IFIM B School, H H Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said, “The most important aspect of leadership is to let go of control and surrender with childlike innocence. A true leader has qualities of compassion, sacrifice, care, determination, humility and leads by example creating leaders and not followers. Everybody is bigger than their problems and they should have faith that only the best will happen to them when their intention is pure. In the current competitive world, talent and inner strength enable one to gain a larger understanding of life, where winning or losing takes the backstage. On business, he said money can become the central point of business when it is within the boundary of ethics. Healthy food habits, exercise, meditation and relaxation help an individual gain the right balance between business and life” he added.
Mr. V B Padode added “I feel extremely gratified that the seeds sown two decades ago have grown and are yielding best of fruits for the all-round benefit of corporates and society at large”.
